— The sophomore with the most passing yards in the state this fall isn’t Ty Storey of Charleston.

It’s Adam Dycus of Mayflower.

Dycus threw for 436 yards in last week’s Class 3A first-round playoff victory at Yellville-Summit to push his season total to 3,884 yards — 223 more than Storey, already a coveted recruiting prospect.

Storey, who was offered a scholarship by Arkansas State last summer, threw for 3,661 yards during the regular season (the Tigers had a firstround playoff bye).

Mayflower (6-5) advanced to Friday night’s second round at Prescott with a 42-35 victory.

“I haven’t been surprised how well he’s played after watching him in junior high,” Mayflower Coach Jed Davis said of Dycus. “But I didn’t think he would be one of the top three or four quarterbacks in the state in terms of the numbers he’s put up.”

Only Pulaski Academy senior Lawson Vassar (4,242) has more passing yards this fall.

Dycus, 5-8, 160 pounds, has started every game since moving up as a freshman for Mayflower’s final two games last fall, when he completed 27 of 58 passes for 497 yards and 5 touchdowns in two starts.

But this season, Dycus has flourished in a Spread attack that averages a state-leading 547.2 total yards per game. From the Shotgun, he has completed 227 of 398 passes, including 39 for touchdowns.

Dycus threw for a schoolrecord 601 yards Sept. 28 at Bald Knob.

“The No. 1 thing that impresses you is his understanding of the offense,” Davis said. “He’s also tough. He’s taken a lot of hits, and sometimes you didn’t know if he was going to get back up.”

Davis said Dycus missed the final moments of the Yellville-Summit game with a minor shin bruise.

Senior running back Daniel Gieber moved to quarterback and ran for the game-winning touchdown out of the Wildcat formation, Davis said.

Gieber is among only five seniors on Mayflower’s roster.

Dycus, obviously, is the centerpiece of Mayflower’s future.

“He’ll be our quarterback the next two years, for sure,” Davis said.

Rhett Lashlee threw for a sophomore state-record 4,546 yards in 1999 at Shiloh Christian.
