Youngstown St. upsets Georgia

— Kendrick Perry scored 23 points to lead Youngstown State to a 68-56 victory over Georgia on Monday night.

Perry was 10 of 11 from the free-throw line and Kamren Belin added 17 points for the Penguins (2-0) in the first round of the Legends Classic.

Youngstown State led throughout, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and putting the game away with an 11-0 run that gave the Penguins a 51-33 lead with 7:48 remaining.

Perry, a preseason All-Horizon League pick after leading the conference in scoring last season, was held to three points on 0-for-9 shooting from the field in Youngstown State’s opener.

He added six rebounds and five assists against Georgia.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit five three-pointers and scored a career-high 27 points to lead Georgia (1-1), despite playing most of the second half with three fouls.

The Bulldogs shot 12.5 percent from the field (3 of 24) in the first half.

“That was a frustrating loss,” Georgia Coach Mark Fox said. “They came in here and beat our tail. We set the game back 10 years the way we played offensively in the first half.”

Damian Eargle added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Penguins, who shot 55.6 percent from the three-point line (5 of 9) in the second half.

Youngstown State also out rebounded the Bulldogs 42-31.

Georgia was scoreless from the field for the final 6:19 of Friday’s opening victory over Jacksonville and made only one shot in the first 7:55 against Youngstown State.

The Bulldogs went into halftime having made only 10 of their previous 46 shots (21.7 percent) from the field, combining the second half of the opener with the first half against Youngstown State.

Caldwell-Pope picked up his third foul with 14:27 left after hitting his third three pointer of the second half to cut the lead to 32-29.

With him on the bench, the Bulldogs were scoreless for the next 4:35 as Youngstown State increased its lead to 38-29 on D.J. Cole’s three-pointer with 11:43 left.

Caldwell-Pope hit a jumper to cut the lead to 40-33, but Belin hit two free throws and a three-pointer and Perry had a layup to push Youngstown State’s advantage to 47-33 with 8:23 remaining.

TEXAS A&M 83, TROY 65

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Senior guard Elston Turner scored a game-high 26 points as Texas A&M defeated Troy.

Ray Turner and Fabyon Harris each added 14 points and Alex Caruso chipped in 13.

Hunter Williams led Troy (1-1) with 15 points, and Ray Chambers followed with 10.

The Aggies (2-0), who led 45-29 at halftime, shot 52.7 percent from the field compared to Troy’s 43.6 percent. Elston Turner, the Aggies’ leading scorer last season with 13.9 points per game, made 9 of 14 shots from the field, including four three-pointers.

TOP 25 MEN NO. 1 INDIANA 87, NORTH DAKOTA STATE 61

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Cody Zeller scored 22 points and Remy Abell added a career-high 14 points to lead No. 1 Indiana past North Dakota State.

The Hoosiers (2-0) struggled to get in sync against the foul-prone Bison (1-1).

Early in the second half, after the Bison closed to 48-38, Zeller and Abell combined for 15 points in a 23-13 run that turned the game into a rout.

North Dakota State was led by Marshall Bjorklund with 16 points and Mike Felt with 11.

NO. 5 MICHIGAN 91, IUPUI 54

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Trey Burke scored 22 points and Glenn Robinson III added 21 to lead Michigan in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

Burke equaled a career high with nine assists and Robinson made his first eight shots from the field. Michigan (2-0) has been a model of efficiency on offense this season. After beating Slippery Rock 100-62 in their opener, the Wolverines shot 60 percent from the field and went 13 of 21 from three-point range against IUPUI.

Michigan advances to play Cleveland State in the next round tonight.

Purdue transfer John Hart scored 15 points for IUPUI (1-1).

NO. 17 MEMPHIS 81, NORTH FLORIDA 66

MEMPHIS - Tarik Black had 18 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 17 Memphis in its season opener.

Memphis (1-0) eventually pulled away in the middle stages of the first half and coasted through the second half.

Joe Jackson finished with 14 points,6 rebounds and 6 assists, while Antonio Barton, who keyed Memphis’ rally, scored 11 points.

Jerron Granberry led the Ospreys (1-1) with 17 points, including 13 in the second half. Parker Smith scored 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from three point range.

NO. 20 NOTRE DAME 84, MONMOUTH 57

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Garrick Sherman had 22 points and seven rebounds to lead No. 20 Notre Dame.

Jack Cooley added 16 points for the Irish (2-0) and Pat Connaughton had 13.

Monmouth (1-1) scored the game’s first four points, but Cooley’s free throw four minutes into the game put the Irish ahead for good.

Notre Dame, which out rebounded Monmouth 42-24, only shot 61 percent from the free throw line.

Dion Nesmith led the Hawks with 13 points.

SEC WOMEN NO. 13 VANDERBILT 62, LIPSCOMB 45

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Jasmine Lister made six three-pointers en route to 24 points as No. 13 Vanderbilt defeated Lipscomb in the season opener for both teams.

Lister made 8 of 14 shots from the field and had a team-high five assists for the Commodores. Christina Foggie added 13 points and Tiffany Clark finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
