UALR women home in, win on road

— Taylor Gault scored a career-high 33 points and UALR shot almost 55 percent from the field in a 73-64 victory over Tulsa in a season-opening victory on Monday night at the Reynolds Center.

Gault, last season’s Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, made 13 of 20 shots and 3 of 4 three-pointers and also had 5 rebounds in helping the Trojans (1-0) overcome 28 turnovers.

Gault scored 20 points in the second half and had seven points in a 13-4 run that turned a 38-38 tie into a 51-42 UALR lead with 11:28 left.

Hannah Fohne added 10 points and 9 rebounds and Kiera Clark added 6 points and 8 rebounds for UALR, which out rebounded Tulsa 42-31.

Taleya Mayberry led Tulsa (0-2) with 22 points, Loren McDaniel had 12 and Tiffani Couisnard had 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Tulsa was held to 33.9 percent shooting, was 1 of 12 from behind the three-point line and committed 22 turnovers.

TENNESSEE-MARTIN 72, ARKANSAS STATE 62

MARTIN, Tenn. - After trailing 33-32 at halftime, Arkansas State fell to Tennessee-Martin at Skyhawk Arena.

The Skyhawks led by as many 14 points in the second half, but the Red Wolves (0-2) cut the lead to 63-59 with 2:49 left in the game after going on an 8-0 run, but ASU could get no closer.

Tennessee-Martin (1-1) pushed the lead back to six on a layup by Shelby Crawford and Jessica Newsome made it an eight-point game after making two free throws with 1:06 left in the game. The Skyhawks went 7 of 8 from the free throw line in the game’s final minute to help close out the victory.

ASU was led by junior college transfer Carlisha Wyatt, who had 19 points and went 9 of 11 from the field. Wyatt went 5 for 5 from the field in the first half and paced the ASU bench, which had 29 points.

The Red Wolves were plagued by turnovers for the second consecutive game and committed 19, which the Skyhawks converted into 14 points.

ASU shot 45 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 35-31.

Jane Morrill finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Ashley Olvera added 12 points and seven assists.

SWAC MEN UAPB 62, MD. EASTERN SHORE 52

HONOLULU - Lazabian Jackson had 19 points and 10 rebounds, Terrell Kennedy added 15 points and Arkansas-Pine Bluff won its first game of the season.

The Golden Lions (1-2), who were limited to eight players for the third consecutive game, shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and made 7 of 15 three-pointers.

Jackson made 3 of 4 three-pointers, while Tevin Hammond, who finished with eight points, made 2 of 5 and Kennedy and Mitchell Anderson each also made threes.

UAPB overcame a 48-34 rebounding disadvantage by holding Maryland Eastern Shore to 23 percent shooting.

Davon Haynes added 13 points for the Golden Lions, who won a nonconference game for the third time since George Ivory took over as coach in 2008.
