An ordinarily well-behaved and strictly sober comma got on a jag at the Gazette office yesterday morning, and wandering about in this condition, got in the wrong place and did some classy tricks in alchemy, with the city’s finances. The statue is a centerpiece and final element of the Arkansas Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The statue, titled “Going Home,” was sculpted by John W. Deering, 31, of Little Rock, chief staff artist for the Arkansas Democrat.

Most state, federal and local government employees in central Arkansas took a load off on Monday. But Little Rock’s employees schlepped to work on Veterans Day as they have for as long as anyone can remember. “It’s been that way since I’ve been employed with the city,” said interim City Manager Bruce Moore, who is a veteran of the Persian Gulf War. “I’m not sure why we don’t close. Obviously, we respect and honor the veterans of our country.”
