UAPB rushes to victory

— Justin Billings and Dennis Jenkins each had more than 100 rushing yards as Arkansas-Pine Bluff beat Grambling State 24-17 Saturday at Eddie Robinson Stadium.

The Golden Lions (8-2, 7-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who have won five consecutive, outgained the Tigers (1-9, 0-8) 526-258, including 318 rushing yards.

UAPB, the SWAC’s Western Division champion, hosts Prairie View A&M next Saturday at Golden Lion Stadium before playing in the SWAC Championship Game Dec. 8 in Birmingham, Ala.

UAPB jumped out to a 14-0 lead as Benjamin Anderson completed a 66-yard touchdown pass to Willie Young and ran in an 8-yard score. Billings added a 1-yard touchdown run as the Golden Lions built a 24-7 lead by halftime.

Billings finished with 130 yards on 22 carries while Jenkins had 105 yards on 19 carries.

Anderson completed 14 of 22 passes for 208 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions for UAPB.

In other SWAC games, Garrick Jones rushed for two late touchdowns to rally host Mississippi Valley State (4-6, 4-4) to a 22-20 victory over Prairie View A&M (3-7, 3-5). ... John Gibbs threw three touchdowns and Arnold Walker ran for two more as host Alcorn State (4-6, 4-4) won 34-24 over Texas Southern (2-8, 2-6).

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Tim Flanders rushed for 138 yards on 17 carries and scored 2 touchdowns as Sam Houston State (8-2, 6-1) clinched a share of the Southland Conference title with a victory over Northwestern (La.) State (4-6, 2-4).

The Bearkats share the Southland title with Central Arkansas (8-2, 6-1).
