— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 10, 1912

Solemnly promising Judge Jacob Trieber of the United States District Court yesterday, that he never again would associate with persons of doubtful character, and never take a drink of any kind of liquor, T.A. McGraw, 19 years of age of Carthage, Dallas county, escaped a fine and a sentence to the Atlanta penitentiary. McGraw was under indictment for raising a one-dollar bill to $10 and passing it at Hot Springs. He denied that he raised the bill, but admitted that the bill had been in his possession. He said he kept the bill as a souvenir, not intending to put it in circulation, but did so while on a spree at Hot Springs.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 10, 1962

Friends and citizens will honor Mrs. Daisy Bates, state president of the NAACP during the 1957 school desegregation crisis, with a party today to celebrate her birthday and the publication of her book, “The Long Shadow of Little Rock.” Mrs. Bates has been in New Orleans, New York and other cities for the promotion of her book, in which the late Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt wrote the foreword.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 10, 1987

Gov. Bill Clinton declined to comment Monday on whether he has ever smoked marijuana. “One of the nice things about not running for president is I don’t have to entertain all of the personal questions which arise,” he said in a statement released through his press secretary, Mike Gauldin. Questions about past marijuana use by prominent public officials arose over the weekend after Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg asked President Reagan to withdraw his name as a nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court because of controversy over his past use of marijuana.

10 YEARS AGO Nov. 10, 2002 FORT SMITH - Whirlpool Corp. is expanding its manufacturing plant in Fort Smith and bringing as many as 700 new jobs - but exactly what the company plans for its new assembly line remains a mystery. Whirlpool says it’s a “refrigerator product” but won’t elaborate until closer to when the new line is up and running in late 2003. There are several indications, however, that the product could be a futuristic appliance, perhaps a refrigerator with a built-in computer and Internet access.
