QUOTE OF THE DAY

“After being married

for over 37 years, I

showed extremely poor judgment

Teen gets life for Craigslist murders

AKRON, Ohio - A teenager was sentenced Friday to life in prison with no chance for parole for his role in a deadly plot to lure men desperate for work with phony Craigslist job offers.

“I thought it was something horrible,” Brogan Rafferty, 17, told Judge Lynne Callahan before he was sentenced.

Rafferty told the judge, who will preside at the January trial of the man accused of being triggerman, Richard Beasley, 53, that his mentor is evil and deceitful, and said he wished he had taken the opportunity to flee and stop the killings.

“There were many options I couldn’t see at the time,” said Rafferty, who remained composed during the sentencing.

Rafferty was convicted of aggravated murder and attempted murder in the deaths of three men and the wounding of a fourth.

The judge, acknowledging the high emotions in court, said she had considered Rafferty’s age, broken-home childhood and lack of any prior record, but said it was outweighed by “executions” that were cold, calculated and methodical.

AP: Florida result is still too close to call

The Associated Press issued an advisory Friday that the presidential race in Florida remains too close to call, as election officials across the state continued to verify results from election night.

As of 5:30 p.m., President Barack Obama leads in the count by 62,501 votes, or 0.74 percent of the total counted.

State law mandates an automatic machine recount of all ballots if the final margin between the top two candidates is less than 0.5 percent of total votes cast.

A number of Florida counties were canvassing results Friday, in advance of today’s noon deadline to submit their unofficial results to Ken Detzner, the secretary of state.

Obama already has been declared the overall winner of the presidential election on the basis of results in the rest of the country. With Florida’s 29 electoral votes still undecided, Obama has won 303 electoral votes to 206 for Republican Mitt Romney.

Mentally disabled woman raped on bus

LOS ANGELES - For 10 agonizing minutes, an 18-yearold mentally disabled woman was raped in the back of a Los Angeles County bus at rush hour as it rolled past a state park, shopping mall and cemetery while no one on board did anything to stop it.

Surveillance video shot on the bus showed the attack Wednesday and helped deputies nab a suspect, but it also showed that the driver and all but one of the few passengers aboard didn’t seem to notice what was going on.

“The victim told our detective that she was shocked and didn’t know what to do and was in fear for her safety and for her life,” said Sgt. Dan Scott of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s office.

The one passenger who appeared to try to get the driver’s attention in the video left the bus without saying anything, and police were still trying to track him down.

Kerry Trotter, 20, was arrested thanks to an anonymous tip by someone who saw an image from the surveillance camera that was publicly released.
