— Well, that’ll larn ’em!

I have coined a new word in honor of Mike Masterson, along with a new academic achievement: Arksymoronic—A thought process of contradictory knowledge used for special effect, e.g. “Arkansas Educated.” A new course in journalism taught by Mr. Masterson, with the assistance of Dana Kelley, to teach statistics; and featured as guest lecturer on the value of education, Paul Greenberg and other protagonists as needed.

This course should be taken with a grain of salt or maybe a truckload. I give my deepest condolences to my fellow Arkansonians who may attend.

The path of no return

This election has brought about a sad, sad time in our nation.

We are no longer the shining city on the hill as expressed by President Ronald Reagan, but rather have chosen a path from which there seems to be no return—one of killing our babies, deviant sexual behavior and a society of whatever seems right to you is okay. God help us.

Are we in mourning?

Are you kidding me? Dark gray uniforms for our Razorbacks? I am a great-grandmother and a lover of Arkansas for many years. We have three generations engraved on the Senior Walk.

There is nothing that thrills my heart more than seeing those redand-white uniforms cover the field. I do not care for the white helmets, but dark gray uniforms? Please—just picture these together. Are these Arkansas colors? I don’t think so.

Have the “powers that be” gone color-blind or have they placed us in mourning? Why are we changing colors? Please go back to our true colors, red and white. When any true Razorback bleeds for Arkansas, they bleed red.

What’s next, a black Hog?

It’s all part of the plan

God knew what this country needed when Barack Obama was reelected.

Common sense and logic may have told us that we were going down the wrong path of secularism and the removal of God from our country’s Declaration of Independence.

God chose Obama. It’s all in the statistics of why this happened. We are not a country of active practicing Christians as a popular majority anymore. Wake up, people; what is our purpose?

More now than ever, it’s to bring unbelievers to Christ. We see the stats, we see the secular decisions that are unfolding to reality away from Christ.

Go forth and make disciples of these people in a disintegrating revelation we are in, which is that of a secular nation. We need to ask God for a new strength to overcome this movement of removing God from our world. A new revival of Christ’s love, a new strength of courage to speak our faith to nonbelievers and bring them home to Christ.

A better use of time

All you “Christian Republicans” who prayed for America by praying for a Mitt Romney victory must be left wondering, “What happened?”

Here are some possible explanations for you to ponder. First, your god is smarter than you are. This is just the old adage, “God moves in mysterious ways,” in more simple terms.

Second, your god cares about everyone; not just people who pray, not just Christians, not just Americans, and not just believers.

Third, your god is a mythical creature. You may want to believe in Santa Claus, unicorns, dragons, or even zombies, but that doesn’t make them real.

I will let you decide which of these explanations works best for you. To those who prayed for a Barack Obama win, I suggest you reflect on the above points as well.

It seems to me that all this prayer time might be better spent working to resolve problems rather than praying that others will do it for you.

Event overwhelming

Special commendations to the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas, Wal-Mart, Tyson and the USO for giving us veterans of World War II a day that we will never forget.

There were 25 veterans from Hot Springs Village and about 300 from all over the state who flew to Washington, D.C. We got a great reception at the D.C. airport, with long lines of folks showing their appreciation.

This was followed by bus tours which included the World War II Memorial and all of the other memorials. The tour conductor gave additional information about all the government agencies. It was very informative. We indeed covered all the high spots in the Capitol area.

The flight ended in the evening back in Little Rock, and wow, what a reception! The packed crowd included waving flags, a band and kids singing patriotic songs. The appreciation was overwhelming and it brought some tears.

Thanks again, sponsors and volunteers, who put forth tremendous effort in making this World War II Honor Flight a super day.

Give others a chance

As a reader of the Arkansas Gazette and Democrat since the 1950s and the Democrat-Gazette since 1991, plus as a former sports writer, columnist, sports editor, newspaper editor and publisher, I have an observation: Other than loyalty, why is Wally Hall given premier space on the front page of the sports section?

He tends to offer up three kinds of columns: (1) “doughnut hole” columns—start with a statement and end with a similar statement; (2) disjointed ramblings that have lots of words but say nothing; and (3) pieces of gibberish that obviously (at least to me) have never been ushered through the editing process.

The paper is blessed with talented writers who deserve a chance to share that space. Reading other writers seven days a week at the bottom of the lead sports page would likely increase readership dramatically.

I believe Hall occupies that space because of his loyalty to the Democrat during the newspaper war. Okay, I understand and appreciate loyalty. But move his column inside the section and see what happens to readership. At the very least, assign him a personal editor so that they can work together to make his column readable, interesting and relevant.

The readers deserve better than they are getting.
