— 100 YEARS AGO Nov. 9, 1912 HELENA - The Helena City Council heard Superintendent Morse of the Iron Mountain railroad last night relative to the ordinance requiring the Iron Mountain to erect safety gates on the streets of the city crossed by the tracks of that road. Superintendent Morse argued that such steps would not increase the safety of any one and would be an unreasonable hardship on the road.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 9, 1962

The state Health Department said today no one should skip the Arkansas-Rice football game at Fayetteville Saturday because of fear of a polio outbreak there. “There’s no danger,” said Dr.William Bunch, head of the Division of Communicable Disease Control. “I’d go if I had the tickets.” Bunch said four cases of polio had been verified to his office from Washington County. Bunch said the Health Department had been flooded with calls from persons who wanted to know if it was safe to go to Fayetteville.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 9, 1987

Preschool children at17 Head Start Centers in Pulaski County have been exposed to faulty wiring and other hazardous conditions, as well as utility service disruptions when bills weren’t paid, according to state and federal records. The children have also been served inadequate meals and were frequently supervised by fewer employees than federal regulations require. The deficiencies were discovered during an inquiry by the Arkansas Democrat. The Head Start Program for 700 children is sponsored by the Urban League of Arkansas Inc.

10 YEARS AGO Nov. 9, 2002 JUDSONIA - About 200 residents returned to their homes Friday morning after an electrical fire destroyed a downtown plastics-recycling plant and produced a cloud of toxic smoke that forced an evacuation the night before, officials said. Mid-South Plastic Inc., at the corner of Arkansas 367 and 13, caught fire about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, officials said. The building was in ruins by midnight when firetrucks from Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville began spraying the foam that finally suffocated the flames.
