Hu opens Chinese Congress with call to fight corruption

China’s ruling Communist Party opened a quinquennial conclave Thursday with a stark warning from its outgoing leader, President Hu Jintao, that the 91-year-old party could collapse if it fails to rein in rampant corruption that has produced a myriad of scandals in recent months and caused widespread public disaffection.
