Ex-Camden Fairview standout excels

— So far, so good for former Camden Fairview standout Dominique Reed.

Actually, it’s been more than good.

Reed, a freshman wide receiver at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, was named second-team All-Jayhawk Conference on Wednesday after leading the Ravens in receptions, receiving yards and scoring this fall.

In 9 games, Reed caught 46 passes for 813 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also returned 8 kickoffs for 201 yards and 1 touchdown.

Reed’s 90.3 receiving yards per game is second in school history, and his 13 receptions in last week’s 52-28 playoff loss to Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College tied a school record.

Fairview Coach Buck James said Wednesday afternoon that he’s not surprised how well Reed performed because he’s dripping with talent.

“Heck, he can do betterthan this,” James said. “This guy’s A.J. Green. He’s got more ability in his little finger than probably most people ever have. He’s got it. I’ve said that all along.”

Reed, 6-3, 165 pounds, was a member Arkansas Democrat-Gazette All-Arkansas team last fall after catching 46 passes for 1,070 yards and 14 touchdowns, returning 5 kickoffs for 186 yards and 2 touchdowns and 5 punts for 99 yards and 1 touchdown.

Reed also uncorked the longest triple jump in Arkansas high school history (49 feet, 9.75 inches) at the Meetof Champs in May at Lake Hamilton.

James said Arkansas placed Reed at Coffeyville, a longtime feeder to major schools across the country, in order to improve his academics and eventually transfer to Fayetteville.

“The plan for him was to graduate at Christmas next year,” James said. “They even talked about him not playing next year and then graduating, so he would have three years to play. That’s a possibility.”

Reed may have played his last game this season if Coffeyville (6-4) doesn’t receive a bowl invitation.

Reed’s 13 receptions Sunday totaled 184 yards. His two touchdowns gave him 66 points this season.

“He’s a big-time guy, no doubt,” James said. “I’ve always said that.”

Former North Little Rock standout Martrell Spaight, a sophomore linebacker at Coffeyville, was named Jayhawk Defensive Player of the Year.
