— GOLF Kerstis leads UALR to runner-up finish

UALR sophomore Alfred Kerstis rallied from a four-stroke deficit to force a playoff at the Alabama State Fall Beach Classic on Tuesday, but Troy’s Tolver Dozier made a 15-foot birdie putt to claim medalist honors in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Kerstis trailed Dozier by four strokes entering the final round, but Kerstis was the only player to break par Tuesday and sent the event into a playoff by shooting 1-under-par 71 over the final 18 holes.

Kerstis’ 2-under 214 total (75-68-71) at the par-72, 7,165-yard Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club helped the Trojans (301-293-297) finish in a tie for second place with Murray State (292-296-303) at 27-over 891. Vanderbilt shot 18-over 882 (289-300-293) to win the team title.

BASEBALL Royals tab Bradshaw as hitting coordinator

Former Northwest Arkansas Naturals hitting coach Terry Bradshaw has been named as the Kansas City Royals’ minor league hitting coordinator.

Bradshaw, 43, has served as the Naturals hitting coach for the past four years. Prior to joining the Naturals, Bradshaw spent five years as the hitting coach for Class AAA Omaha. He previously spent four years as hitting coach for three of Kansas City’s Class A affiliates: Wilmington (2002-2003), Burlington (2001) and Charleston (2000).

VOLLEYBALL ASU falls at Missouri

Lisa Henning had 14 kills and Molly Kreklow had 35 assists in Missouri’s 25-15, 25-21, 25-17 victory over Arkansas State on Tuesday in Columbia, Mo.

Marie Hadar led Arkansas State (17-12) with 8 kills, Jasmine Terry added 7 and Allison Kearney had 27 assists.

Arkansas State never led Missouri (17-8) and the second and third sets were tied just once.

SAU beats UAM in four sets

Denise De Vine had 14 kills, Monica Cox and Courtney Smith had 10 kills each and Southern Arkansas beat Arkansas-Monticello 25-13, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20 on Tuesday night in Monticello.

It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Lady Muleriders (22-9, 11-2 Great American Conference) and fifth in their past six matches.

Christina Rini and Amy Kleypas had 13 kills each for Arkansas-Monticello (11-22, 4-9).

BASKETBALL

ASU beats Henderson State in exhibition

Marcus Hooten scored 20 points and Brandon Peterson had 12 points and 11 rebounds in Arkansas State’s 95-65 victory over Henderson State in an exhibition game Tuesday night in Jonesboro.

Arkansas State shot 56 percent from the field and made 8 of 19 three-pointers while outrebounding Henderson State 45-30.

Ed Townsel came off the bench to make 4 of 5 three-pointers and score 18 points, Kendrick Washington had 13 points and Raeford Worsham added 10.

Melvin Haynes led Henderson State, which played seven players, with 19 points while Denzel Lyles added 14.

Lyon beats John Brown in opener

Senior forward Debbie Onukwube made 7 of 11 shots and scored 19 points to help Lyon College beat John Brown 68-65 in the season opener Tuesday night in Siloam Springs.

Gabby Jenkins made 3 of 4 three-pointers to add 13 points, and Whitney Keith scored 10 points for Lyon (1-0).

Sierra Shipley led John Brown with 18 points.
