GEORGIA

WR lost to knee injury

ATLANTA - Georgia receiver Marlon Brown, who is tied for the team lead in catches, will miss the remainder of the season after hurting his left knee in Saturday night’s victory over Mississippi.

Coach Mark Richt said Sunday Brown tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee. The injury will end the senior’s college career, but Brown is expected to make a full recovery after surgery.

“We know he’ll be able to continue with his pro career because I think he was well on his way to have that happen for him,” Richt said.

Brown and another senior, Tavarres King, share the lead with 27 catches.

Brown has 4 touchdown catches.

“I’m very sorry for him and for Georgia, too,” Richt said. “It’s just a hard thing to swallow right now.”

The injury comes one month after another top receiver, Michael Bennett, hurt his right knee in practice, ending his season.

Brown had 3 catches for 113 yards, including a 66-yard touchdown, in Georgia’s 37-10 victory over Ole Miss. Georgia plays at Auburn on Saturday night.

Richt said Rhett McGowan and Justin Scott-Wesley could see more playing time behind King, Malcolm Mitchell, Rantavious Wooten and Chris Conley. King and Brown started against Ole Miss.

“We still have some play-makers,” Richt said. “We’ll miss him, but other guys will have to step up and get after it.”

Richt said offensive guard Chris Burnette, who left the Ole Miss game with a left shoulder injury, is day to day.

MISSOURI

Former Missouri TE arrested

COLUMBIA, Mo. - A state highway patrol report said former Missouri tight end Brandon Holifield has been arrested for possession of marijuana.

According to Missouri State Highway Patrol arrest report, Holifield was pulled over early Sunday morning in Boone County after driving 69 mph in a 55-mph zone.

Upon investigation, he was also arrested for possession of drugparaphernalia, driving without a valid driver’s license and speeding.

He was released from the Boone County Jail after posting a total bond of $800.

Team spokesman Chad Moller said Holifield had been dismissed from the team earlier in the week for violating team policy.

Holifield, from Tallahassee, Fla., was suspended last month for a game after being in a car when three teammates were arrested for possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana.

TENNESSEE

Bray responds well

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee’s Tyler Bray has totaled 898 passing yards with 9 touchdowns and 1 interception in two games since Volunteers coach Derek Dooley warned him to take better care of the ball or risk getting benched.

Bray threw for a school-record 530 yards and matched a career high with 5 touchdown passes Saturday in a 55-48 victory over Troy that ended the Volunteers’ four-game losing streak.

Bray had 8 interceptions and 6 touchdown passes through Tennessee’s first four SEC games, but is displaying the form that caused him to be regarded as a potential firstround draft pick before the season.

CALIFORNIA

No ligament damage

BERKELEY, Calif. - California quarterback Zach Maynard has no ligament damage in his injured left knee and his status for this week’s game against No. 3 Oregon remains in doubt.

Coach Jeff Tedford said Sunday that an MRI on Maynard was negative and he would be day to day this week.

The Bears (3-7, 2-5 Pac-12) host the Ducks on Saturday in their final home game of the season.

Maynard left Friday night’s 21-13 loss to Washington in the fourth quarter with the injury. The loss assured that the Bears would miss a bowl game for the second time in three seasons.

Maynard has thrown for 2,214 yards and 12 touchdowns this season.
