Georgia gunman wounds 7 at fair

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Police searched Sunday for at least one gunman who wounded seven people, mostly teenagers, overnight after opening fire amid the rides at a crowded fair in Georgia.

Nobody was killed in the shooting late Saturday at the Coastal Empire Fair on Savannah’s suburban south side, but seven people were treated for gunshot wounds at area hospitals, Savannah-Chatham County police spokesman Julian Miller said Sunday.

Witnesses described seeing a gunman wearing a dark jumpsuit, Miller said, but investigators hadn’t ruled out the possibility there was more than one shooter.

Police had not determined a motive for the shootings.

Several people were detained and questioned Saturday night, but all had been released by investigators.

Miller said he didn’t know if any of the victims were specifically targeted in the shooting.

Pepper spray used at Oregon protest

PORTLAND, Ore. - Several hundred people marched in northeast Portland in a protest rally that led to a clash with police, who used pepper spray.

The Oregonian reports that Saturday afternoon’s protest by a coalition of groups that grew out of last year’s Occupy Portland movement was mostly peaceful.

But, police said they responded with pepper spray after a few of the demonstrators used wooden shields to confront officers.

Authorities did not say how many people were sprayed, but one person was arrested. The Oregonian reported at least 20 were sprayed, but there was no word of any injuries.

Police said organizers did not have a permit and did not respond to requests to discuss the march, which organizers say was planned as an election message against funding cuts to social and public services.

Boy, 2, dies at zoo after fall, mauling

PITTSBURGH - A 2-year-old boy visiting the Pittsburgh zoo with his mother and friends was killed Sunday when he fell about 11 feet off a railing into an exhibit that’s home to a pack of African painted dogs, which pounced on the boy and mauled him, zoo officials said.

It’s not clear whether he died from the fall or the attack, said Barbara Baker, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

When the boy fell, other visitors immediately told staff members, who responded along with Pittsburgh police.

Zookeepers called off the dogs, and seven of them immediately went to a back building. Three more eventually were drawn away from the boy, but the last dog wouldn’t go into the building, and police had to shoot him, Baker said.
