FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas Coach John L. Smith has suspended linebacker Terrell Williams indefinitely after his arrest early Sunday in Fayetteville on charges of driving while intoxicated.
Williams was pulled over on Martin Luther King Boulevard for crossing the center line on more than one occasion at 11:55 p.m. by Fayetteville police after leaving a party at the Highway 62Event Center, according to his arrest report.
Williams’ performance on field sobriety tests “were consistent with those of an intoxicated person,” according to his arrest report, and he was transferred to the Washington County Sheriff ’s Office, where he refused to take further tests for alcohol and “became very argumentative.”
Williams, 21, was also charged with driving to the left of center and for violating the state’s implied consent law, and he was booked into the detention center at 4:07 a.m. He posted a $910 bond and was released at 9:13 a.m., according to the Washington County Detention Center’s Web site.
Williams faces a preliminary hearing at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Fayetteville District Court.
“I am very disappointed in the decisions made by Terrell Williams,” Arkansas Coach John L. Smith said in a news release. “He did not represent himself or the University of Arkansas in a manner we expect and has been suspended indefinitely.
“We have high expectations for the actions of everyone in our program on and off the field and our student-athletes will be held accountable.”
The senior from Tulsa, Okla., posted seven tackles in the Razorbacks’ 19-15 homecoming victory over Tulsa on Saturday afternoon. Two other senior linebackers - captains Alonzo Highsmith and Tenarius Wright - have been lost for the season with injuries, meaning true freshmen A.J. Turner and Otha Peters, could be in line to start on Saturday at South Carolina.
Williams is the eighth Arkansas football player arrested in 2012 and the fifth since John L. Smith took the coaching reins on April 23.
