FYI: A Play About Family

“Checks and Balances” focuses on Eleanor Kaufman, a wealthy, aging widow.

As her memory fades, she requires more assistance from those outside of her family. Not all of them have her best interests at heart.

She hires a college student to help balance her books and pay her bills. He notices she has been spending a lot of money, although she never leaves her house. As her accountant points out, “$156,000 in one year sounds a little incomprehensible.”

But getting the truth from others associated with Kaufman is not so easy either.

Joan Porter, who plays the role of Kaufman, fi rst thought the play was about greed.

She’s changed her mind.

“These are all good people who are doing their best to survive,” she says. “They’re honest people, but they’ll do anything to help their family.

There’s no villian. There’s no hero.”
