Memphis contractor sentenced to prison for illegal dumping

— An excavation company owner in Memphis was sentenced to eight months in prison and ordered to make restitution to property owners for illegally dumping construction debris.

The Commercial Appeal reported that Thomas Bolton’s B&W Excavating Co. contracted with the city of Memphis to bulldoze hundreds of condemned houses, but avoided hundreds of thousands of dollars in disposal fees by dumping the rubbish on privately owned land in Southwest Memphis.

State prosecutor Kirby May said Bolton’s company was awarded more than $1 million between 2007 and 2009 to bulldoze more than 450 condemned homes around the city.

He was also ordered to make restitution of $1.56 million to three landowners and perform community service annually while on probation for 15 years.
