— 100 YEARS AGO May 17, 1912 IMBODEN - The new city officials of Imboden have launched a vigorous cleanup campaign, and will labor to make the town what their motto calls for, “a bigger, better and brighter Imboden.” The officers have been instructed to arrest any violators of the sanitary ordinances. Notices will be given to each property holder and tenant to clean up immediately and disinfect the premises.

50 YEARS AGO May 17, 1962

Little Rock University flew the United States flag yesterday from its first permanent flagpole. As a result of a universitywide drive to obtain a pole and a flag, the institution had several flags from which to select. The one that fluttered in a spanking breeze was one that has flownover the nation’s capital in Washington and was given by 5th district Congressman Dale Alford. Other flags were received from Schuh, Miller and Trotter, an advertising agency, the American Legion and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Two Arkansas flags have also been givento the university.

25 YEARS AGO May 17, 1987

Ed Bethune, state Republican Party chairman, told members of the executive committee Saturday that Gov. Bill Clinton is “minor league” and his possible presidential candidacy has been ignored outside of Arkansas. Bethune made the comments to 14 executive committee members during a meeting at the Twin City Bank building in North Little Rock. Bethune called Clinton “the boy wonder” and said he wouldn’t be able to “pull the wool” over the eyes of people outside Arkansas.

10 YEARS AGO May 17, 2002

Establishments identified as public nuisances in North Little Rock face the revocation of their business licenses under a new ordinance intended to help City Hall fight crime. Under the new ordinance, effective this week, the City Council will be able to revoke a business or occupation license based on continued criminal activity at the location as documented by police. Owners will have a chance to defend their business before a council vote.
