Family files lawsuit in death of 17-year-old Bentonville student

The family of a 17-year-old Bentonville High School student killed last November in a wreck on Interstate 540 filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the driver of the other vehicle, his employer and two vehicle manufacturers.

Sara Symons died on Sept. 1 when a 2010 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Kendall Riggins collided with her Jeep near the Highway 102 exit in Bentonville, rolling Symons vehicle multiple times and throwing her from the vehicle. Riggins was cited for careless or prohibited driving at the scene.

Riggins’ vehicle was designed to look like a Nascar vehicle, with a wrap-around that advertises his employer, Lindsey and Associates.

Symons’ parents said Wednesday a forensic investigation showed that Sara’s seatbelt malfunctioned and included seatbelt component manufacturer Honeywell International in the lawsuit. The suit also names Chrysler Group, the maker of Symons’ vehicle.
