Lowell police chief dies in Florida

Lowell Police Chief Joe Landers died this morning in a Florida hospital, according to Mayor Eldon Long.

The announcement of Landers’ death came at a 10 a.m. press conference. Flags will fly at half-staff at city offices for one week in Landers’ memory.

Landers was injured last week in a motorcycle accident in Panama City, Fla., where he was attending a motorcycle rally. Landers was riding without a helmet. The vehicle that hit him fled the scene but the driver was later arrested by Florida police. The driver was charged with driving under the influence, officials said.

“There will never be another individual like him,” Long said.
