Fort Smith site to host mock trial

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS — The Fort Smith National Historic Site will host mock trials based on the 1894 case of United States v. Babe Beard at 7 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday.

Beard was charged with ending the life of his nephewWill Jones after Jones and his brothers Ed and John repeatedly tried to steal Beard’s cow. Beard hit Jones in the head with a Winchester rifle, and Jones died the following day.
