Fireworks Cause House Fire

— Fireworks were blamed for a house fire Thursday in western Washington County.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies and firefighters were called to a Tyler Mountain Road home southeast of Lincoln, for a report of a grass fire that spread to the home.

Winston Williams, 19, told deputies he was shooting bottle rockets off the front porch with the homeowner’s two sons when one of the rockets caught the grass on fire. The grass fire spread to the porch and then the house, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Williams and the boys were unable to put the fire out.

Becuause of extremely dry conditions, the county has been under a burn a ban since Wednesday morning. Williams reportedly told deputies he was unaware the burn ban was in effect.

He was issued a warning for unlawful burning.
