— 100 YEARS AGO June 29, 1912

Prof. J.L. Bond, supervisor of rural schools, has sent out a bulletin to the teachers of rural schools, making suggestions regarding the preparations for the opening of the school sessions. He urges that the teachers go to the districts in which they are to teach two or three days in advance of the opening of the school and make every preparation for the opening. He pays special stress upon the importance of a proper classification of the pupils. He urges the teachers to have definite plans and lessons for every session.

50 YEARS AGO June 29, 1962

Workmen yesterday began installation of heavy metal screens over cell windows on the second floor of the Pulaski County Jail. One of those windows was used three weeks ago when a pistol was smuggled into the jail and three teen-age girl inmates attempted unsuccessfully to break jail. The screens, which had been ordered for some time, were custom made for the windows. Each of the seven windows received two screens over the outside of the bars - an insect screen, and the heavier security screen.

25 YEARS AGO June 29, 1987

Tuesday will be the last official day of work in the Little Rock School District for Dr. Ed Kelly, who has been superintendent of the district for the past five turbulent years. Kelly, 45, is taking an $82,000-a-year job as superintendent of the Prince William County, Va., school district, which has an enrollment of 38,000 students and a budget of $192 million, compared to 26,000 Little Rock students and a 1987-88 budget of $72.3 million.

10 YEARS AGO June 29, 2002

Little Rock’s Wakefield Elementary School was destroyed by fire on Friday, canceling a summer community program for about 90 children and throwing into question where nearly 400 pupils will attend classes this fall. The southwest Little Rock school, at 75 Westminister Drive, caught fire around 6 p.m. and was still burning four hours later. No one was injured, and firefighters didn’t know how the fire started.
