Moonrise, Magic and Ted the talking bear, oh my!

In this week’s MovieStyle, critic Piers Marchant regards the much anticipated (by some of us anyway) new Wes Anderson film Moonrise Kingdom and finds it a welcome, if familiar addition to Anderson’s distinctive oeurve. Marchant also reviews Magic Mike, a deceptively innocent movie about male strippers from Steven Soderbergh, a director who seems diametrically opposed to Anderson in that he seems determined not to exhibit a signature style. Oh, and Piers likes Magic Mike too, comparing it to Jane Austen.

Elsewhere in this busy week, frequent contributor Levi Agee tries on his critic’s cap to have a go as the indie rom-com Lola Versus, and he interviews director Lynne Shelton on the occasion of the opening of her Your Sister’s Sister in Arkansas. (Philip Martin handles critiquing duties on YSS. He finds it, as Arte Johnson would say, “very interesting.”) Finally Dan Lybarger comes down on Seth McFarland’s Ted. Relax, Family Guy fans, it’s a plush landing.
