— 100 YEARS AGO June 26, 1912

FORT SMITH - Justice courts were criticized for piling up expense accounts against the city with unimportant criminal cases by the Grand Jury of the Fort Smith district, which adjourned today with 70 indictments. The jury declared many citizens have been named deputy constables so that they may be entitled to carry revolvers. The jury asks the abolition of this practice. Nearly every cigar dealer in town was indicted for violating the anti-cigarette law, which has never been enforced here.

50 YEARS AGO June 26, 1962

Education Commissioner Arch Ford said today yesterday’s Supreme Court decision on school prayers apparently won’t affect a 1930 Arkansas law requiring daily Bible readings in public schools. “The Supreme Court ruled specifically on prayers,” Ford said. The 1930 law makes daily prayers optional. But it requires that teachers read from scriptures without comment.

25 YEARS AGO June 26, 1987

LAKE VILLAGE - While authorities concur that 16people in one pickup truck is “gross negligence,” apparently there isn’t a state law against it. “This is unreal,” Capt. John Kidwell of the Arkansas State Police headquarters in Warren said Thursday. “We’re lucky more people weren’t killed.” Kidwell said he has been researching state law and has found no specific statute on the number of people who can ride in the back of a pickup.

Rave promoters and the electronic music fans who keep them in business don’t have any new restrictions to worry about in Pulaski County. Quorum Court member Jim Porter withdrew a resolution encouraging the sheriff’s office to use noise and curfew laws to keep the all-night dance and music festivals quiet.Ordinances are already on the books to keep the peace and send young people home after midnight. And besides, Porter said, he’s got nothing against love and music. A group of 20 rave supporters clapped when Porter showed off a black tie dotted with hearts and trumpets that he wore to show them he understood their message.
