1 feared dead in mall roof collapse

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario - At least one person was feared dead and another trapped inside the rubble after a roof collapsed at a mall in northern Ontario, authorities said Sunday.

More than 24 hours after the collapse, rescue workers were unable to reach the victims because the structure was too unstable. They said it would take until early this morning before the structure was deemed safe enough for search and rescue teams to go back in. Images taken with a camera show a hand and foot in the dusty debris, said Ontario Provincial Police Inspector Percy Jollymore.

Fire officials heard tapping Sunday morning in another part of the rubble, but nothing had been heard for hours.

They said they also tried to reach that person by drilling through a wall, but found the structure too unsafe to risk entering far enough inside.

Police compiled a list of nine people missing since the collapse Saturday, but the names were being crossed off as members of the community accounted for their loved ones.

At least 22 people suffered minor injuries Saturday afternoon when a portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled down two floors into an area near the food court at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake.

4 NATO troops die in Afghanistan

KABUL - NATO said four servicemen died in southern Afghanistan this weekend.

One serviceman died in an insurgent attack and another in a bomb blast on Saturday, the alliance said. The two other servicemen died Sunday in a traffic accident in the south.

The coalition did not identify the nationalities of the dead or give further details.

NATO forces usually wait for individual nations to identify their dead.

Separately, the coalition said a NATO helicopter made a forced landing in the south Saturday. It said no one was killed and that initial reports said there was no enemy activity in the area.

Tunisia extradites Libya’s ex-premier

TUNIS, Tunisia - Tunisia extradited Libya’s former prime minister to his country Sunday, despite concerns that he would be tortured or unfairly prosecuted there.

Libyan Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib held a news conference in Tripoli to announce the return of Al-Baghdadi Al-Mahmoudi, who had served as the last prime minister of deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

“Today, he was delivered by the Tunisian government, and he’s now kept in a prison managed by the Justice Ministry,” said el-Keib, adding that Al-Mahmoudi will be tried for purported crimes against the Libyan people.

Al-Mahmoudi, 67, was arrested in September for illegally crossing the frontier into Tunisia as he tried to flee to Algeria, where Gadhafi’s family had sought refuge.

In January, 15 Tunisian and international human-rights groups signed a statement opposing Al-Mahmoudi’s extradition, saying he risked death or torture if he was returned to Libya.
