— 100 YEARS AGO June 25, 1912

IMBODEN - A.H. Hatley, an octogenarian of Maynard, Randolph county, is cutting another set of teeth at his advanced age. About six years ago he had the remaining decayed snags extracted, and recently symptoms that reminded him of teeth-cutting of childhood days appeared, followed almost immediately by new teeth in the place of those extracted. He is very proud of his new set of molars.

50 YEARS AGO June 25, 1962

Immediate and concerned reaction was voiced today by two school superintendents and a school board member to the U.S.Supreme Court decision outlawing a 22-word prayer offered in New York Public Schools. The school board member, J.H. Cottrell Jr., said the decision “shocked” him and he questioned whether the court had overlooked a provision of the constitution barring Congress from making any laws regarding the free exercise of religion. Parsons said there was no policy on the use of a prayer or readings from the Bible in the Little Rock system.

25 YEARS AGO June 25, 1987

The Arkansas Supreme Court rejected arguments Wednesday by a Fort Smith man that his ex-wife, who is white, should lose custody of their son because she is married to a black man. In reaching its decision, the court upheld a ruling by Crawford County Chancellor Bernice L. Kizer in the case of Peggy D. and Gary A. Chronister of Fort Smith, who were divorced June 11, 1985.

If witnesses from the Huckabee administration evade questions or shade the truth about its computerized accounting system in testifying before a legislative committee Wednesday, another panel will use subpoena power to compel testimony under oath, a state senator said Monday. “I think the public and the Legislature deserve the truth about the problems with AASIS, how it has cost the taxpayers, and how much it is going to cost, and it is clear the administration has not [been] truthful for political reasons,” said Sen. Kevin Smith, D-Helena. Smith is a co-chairman of the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee.
