Board Eyes ‘Swap Days’

SOME SAY POLICY TOO RESTRICTIVE

— A new policy proposal that gives the school district more control over the kind of training teachers take on their own time is up for consideration Thursday by the Fayetteville School Board.

Some teachers are upset the district is rewriting a policy on so-called swap days. The Fayetteville Education Association, for instance, claims in an email to Superintendent Vicki Thomas the administration is dictating what days and what activities teachers can do this summer to earn their swap days in November.

Swap days have traditionally involved teachers going through professional development for one or two days during the summer, then they can swap those days to be off work during the week of Thanksgiving.

Teachers have traditionally had flexibility in choosing the subject matter of the summer training. The new proposal would give the district more control over the training the teachers go through during their summer breaks.

If approved by the School Board, the policy will take effect July 1, according to Thomas.

The two sides plan to meet but a date hasn’t been set.
