— 100 YEARS AGO June 24, 1912 MEMPHIS - There is a prospect that Memphians may get to see the battleship Arkansas this summer. The people of Helena have asked the Navy Department to send the dreadnought there some time in July so that the people of Arkansas can present her with a silver service.

50 YEARS AGO June 24, 1962

Gambling in Hot Springs was upheld last night by the city’s mayor and police chief as financially beneficial and acceptable to the community. The comments were made in a filmed interview over television station KTHV with newsman George Moore. Mayor Dan Wolfe said the present gambling situation existed when he assumed office and most of the people in Hot Springs feel the casinos are necessary. He noted that the casino operators have paid nearly $300,000 in a voluntary tax which was used to help finance a city auditorium and other projects.

25 YEARS AGO June 24, 1987

The FBI is investigating allegations that a campground and recreationalvehicle park for members only near Hot Springs excludes blacks and other minorities. Former employees of River View Paradise Inc. made those allegations in a report published in the Arkansas Democrat on Sunday. In that report, former River View employees who were interviewed by the newspaper said they had evidence of racial discrimination by River View aimed at maintaining an allwhite membership. “We are looking into it to determine if there is a violation,” said Dale Kent, a special agent for the FBI office at Little Rock.

10 YEARS AGO June 24, 2002

Electricity will surge into North Little Rock homes next week from a different power supplier, though residents aren’t supposed to even notice. Duke Energy North America, a Houston subsidiary of Duke Energy of Charlotte, N.C., will become the power provider for the North Little Rock Electric Department’s 38,000 customers as June rolls into July next Monday morning. Duke Energy will take over for previous provider Entergy of Arkansas, having won a $40.4 million contract from the North Little Rock City Council in late November.
