— 100 YEARS AGO June 23, 1912

Secretary George R. Brown of the Board of Trade stated yesterday that he had received a letter from one of the citizens of Little Rock urging that in the interest of a “sane” Fourth of July that the Boy Scouts of Arkansas be invited to Little Rock for a celebration. Mr. Brown referred the communication to the Entertainment Fund Committee.

50 YEARS AGO June 23, 1962

The issuance of overtime parking tickets for military vehicles in Little Rock apparently has slacked off.This was the word today from the traffic violations bureau. A spokesman said he couldn’t find where a ticket had been written yesterday afternoon. He added, however, “I don’t know how long it will last.” It seems the military has observed parking regulations in the past for short spells, then reverted back to ignoring the rules governing overtime parking. An attempt to iron out the problem will be made Monday.

25 YEARS AGO June 23, 1987

The state Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to hire Dr. Ruth Steele, 45, as director of the state Department of Education, making her the first woman to head the department. Her hiring comes on the cutting edge of public education reform in Arkansas and at a time of widespread staff vacancies in key department positions. Mrs. Steele said she views this time as a “rare opportunity” to create “an impact that can be longstanding.” 10 YEARS AGO June 23, 2002

Arkansas, whose fouryear state universities were once among the most affordable, has become one of the more expensive states in which to attend college - a change that occurred in just 10 years.Tuition at Arkansas’ fouryear public universities during the 1990s rose by a higher percentage than any other state in the nation except Hawaii, according to a recently published report. Average tuition and fees at Arkansas’ public fouryear colleges increased by 77 percent from $1,962 - when adjusted for inflation - to $3,477, according to the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, a nonprofit, nonpartisan, Californiabased research institute.
