Boone County man held after ‘pot’ plants found

Authorities seized more than 100 marijuana plants during a search of a Boone County residence June 15, resulting in the arrest of a man seen the previous day carrying guns in Fayetteville, according to a Boone County sheriff’s office news release.

Washington County sheriff’s deputies arrested Daniel Smith, 39, on June 16 and transported him to the Boone County jail, where he was charged with “ manufacturing” a controlled substance (marijuana), possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) and simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms.

Smith’s bond was set at $50,000. Because of medical problems, he was taken to a secure medical facility, the release said.

Fayetteville police responded to a call June 14 that a man was seen carrying guns across a field, and when they arrived they found a vehicle registered to Smith thathad been abandoned, according to the release.

In a search of the area, police found a shotgun and requested a welfare check on Smith’s Boone County residence, the release said.

A Boone County patrol sergeant responded to the residence and saw the front door and windows had been shot out, according to the release.

Authorities, fearing someone was hurt, entered the home and discovered a marijuana growing operation, therelease said. Police executed a search warrant on the property and seized more than 100 marijuana plants growing in four rooms.

On June 15, Fayetteville police reported to the Boone County sheriff’s office that Smith had been located at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, the release said.

Washington County sheriff’s deputies arrested Smith after he left the hospital and transported him to Boone County.
