Shooters Ready For Tournament

BELLA VISTA — Shooters moved forward to the shooting line Thursday afternoon to begin their practice rounds for the Cancer Challenge Trap Shoot Tournament today at the Highlands Gun Range.

There are 35 three-person teams participating in the daylong event. Each team member will shoot 100 rounds at clay targets.

There are morning and afternoon sessions for the tournament. The morning session begins at 8 a.m., followed by a break for lunch, then an afternoon session from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the first- and second-place teams as well as the first- and second-place individuals. If needed, there will be a shootoff to determine the first- and second-place finishers.

Thursday night’s event included a practice round and a Cajun dinner. The scheduled Rhythm and Records Shooting Show by Patrick Flanagan, a world-record shotgun shooter, was canceled after he pulled out of the event.

“Serious shooters as well as casual shooters are here for a good cause,” said Jeff Waggener, a member of the trap shoot committee. "The Cancer Challenge is a great cause that does a lot to raise funds for work in Northwest Arkansas.”

“It’s a good time for interaction and just having a good time in a social setting.”

Cabela’s Outdoor Sports has a team in the competition and Waggener thought they’d be the team to beat.

Jim Teeter of BMW of Northwest Arkansas said he had a nephew with leukemia, so this was a good way to show support and have a little fun.

Butch Stutes, who is on one of 10 teams sponsored by Walmart, said the event looks like a lot of fun and he likes the idea of supporting the charity event.
