— 100 YEARS AGO June 22, 1912

Oliver Crisp, the 10-yearold son of Isaac Crisp, 1200 West Markham street, was run down by an automobile about 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon at Third and Louisiana streets. The lad was thrown to the street by the machine, which was driven by Leo Schwartz, but aside from a few bruises apparently was not injured. When asked if he wanted to be taken home, he said he preferred to remain downtown to sell papers.

50 YEARS AGO June 22, 1962

Gubernatorial candidate Dale Alford today challenged “millionaire” Gov.Faubus to a “public debate as to the real reasons you are opposing Dale Alford for governor today.” In a prepared statement Alford took the position that it is Faubus who is opposing Alford rather than the other way around. Alford charged that Gov. Faubus, seeking a fifth term, “has fallen to the lowest form of political demagoguery” when Faubus contended that Alford decided to run for governor because the congressional redistricting act of last year placed Alford in the same district with a veteran House member, Wilbur Mills.

25 YEARS AGO June 22, 1987 HOT SPRINGS - Gov. Bill Clinton still wouldn’t say Sunday whether he is running for president or when he will decide, although he promised, as he has previously, to make a decision soon. “I just haven’t decided,” Clinton said before speaking to a meeting of the Arkansas Municipal League in Hot Springs. While there has been some speculation that Clinton’s delay in making up his mind has caused some damage to his potential candidacy, Clinton assessed his chances favorably Sunday.

10 YEARS AGO June 22, 2002

State Department of Information Systems Director Doug Elkins on Friday offered more details on a federal investigation that may cost the state $9 million. Elkins, in a late Friday news conference, said federal auditors from the Department of Health and Human Services don’t want the federal government subsidizing state computer systems - including the Arkansas Administrative Statewide Information System, or AASIS - at the expense of social programs.
