Alligator — or caiman — reported in Benton County

Residents in the Spring Valley Road area of Benton County saw something in the road Thursday evening. They’re just not sure what it was.

A homeowner called an off-duty Benton County sheriff’s deputy to report an alligator in the road, said Brian McKinzie with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

McKinzie said the reported animal may have been a caiman, a reptile that is legal to own in Arkansas. Caimans are crocodilians from South and Central America and are similar to alligators, according to Merriam-Webster.com.
