Summer Reads Key to Learning

While educators hope students read for fun during the summer, they worry that children who do not spend time with books will lose ground before they return in the fall.

ROGERS — Practice is the key to reading for students in early elementary grades, according to Jo Stevens, literacy facilitator at Eastside Elementary School.

Twelve of Rogers’ 13 elementary schools are sending books home with students for summer. Bellview, which has the lowest free and reduced-price lunch rate in Rogers, doesn’t qualify for the federal money.

• Bonnie Grimes: Selected students kindergarten through fifth grades.

• Eastside: Second and third grades.

• Garfield: Selected students first through fifth grades.

• Grace Hill: Selected students first through fourth grades.

• Lowell: Selected students kindergarten through third grades.

• Joe Mathias: Second and third grades.

• Northside: Selected students kindergarten, second and third grade. Some books will be mailed.

• Old Wire: Second and third grades.

• Russell D. Jones: first, Second and third grades.

• Frank Tillery: First, second and third grades.

• Elza R. Tucker: Selected students kindergarten through fifth grades in eight mailings.

• Westside: Selected students first through fifth grades.
