Police: Two men shot in Fort Smith robbery

Two men were injured and police were searching for a third man Tuesday after an early morning shoot-out at a Kinkead Avenue apartment building in central Fort Smith.

Thomas Smith, 39, told Fort Smith police that two men entered his College Terrace apartment, where the door was unlocked, at about 6 a.m. One carried a handgun and said he intended to rob Smith, said Fort Smith police spokesman Sgt. Daniel Grubbs.

Smith asked if he could get dressed and retrieved a pair of pants that held a revolver, Grubbs said. Smith fired at least four rounds at the two men. One shot back and hit Smith in the shoulder.

Smith was treated and released at a local hospital. No charges had been filed against him Tuesday afternoon.

Police arrested Justin Spencer, 25, at a nearby apartment. Spencer was shot several times in the upper torso. He told a tenant there that he had entered an apartment to buy drugs and got shot.

Spencer was hospitalized, but his injuries weren’t life-threatening, Grubbs said. Spencer was charged with felon in possession of a firearm, according to the police spokesman.

Authorities believe the third man was last seen running north on Albert Pike Avenue.
