Memorial Group Celebrates Anniversary

Todd Renfroe of Fayetteville and his 2-year-old son, Thatcher, listen Saturday as members of the Bowers Memorial Color Guard participate in the 139th annual memorial ceremony hosted by the Southern Memorial Association at the Confederate Cemetery in Fayetteville.

Visitors of the Confederate Cemetery on East Rock Street can now learn more about the women who laid the first headstones nearly 140 years ago.

Battle of Prairie Grove

The Battle of Prairie Grove, fought Dec. 7, 1862, resulted in a tactical stalemate but essentially secured Northwest Arkansas for the Union Army. Following Pea Ridge, Union Gen. Samuel Curtis pressed his invasion of northern Arkansas with the aim of occupying Little Rock. Federal forces suffered 1,251 casualties and Confederate forces suffered 1,317 casualties.
