Flying Possum owner gets two-year sentence

Circuit Judge William Storey sentenced the man who reopened Flying Possum Leather to two years in prison Monday.

Robert “Bob” Daniel Walker, 65, pleaded guilty to felony possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

He had faced up to 10 years in prison for the charge.

Police arrested Walker, his son, James Wallace Walker of Mendocino, Calif., and Aimee Clark, 24, of 300 S. College Ave. in April after identifying a FedEx package containing more than 10 pounds of marijuana that had been shipped from California.

Walker is the brother of Bruce Walker, who ran Flying Possum Leather on Dickson Street for more than 30 years before he died as a result of a March 2011 fire that destroyed his business.

Bob Walker moved from California after the fire and moved the leather-working store to Block Avenue.

He apologized to Judge Storey and Fayetteville residents Monday for breaking the law.

“I hope to return to this community as a legal and productive contributor,” Bob Walker said.

Storey responded, “Your brother was a remarkable person. I’m confident that when you get out — and you will get out in a reasonable period of time — you will be welcome back here in this community.”
