Oxford names December editor

Alex Rawls, a music journalist from Louisiana, will be the guest editor of The Oxford American 2012 Southern Music Issue, the publication announced Wednesday.

The issue, which will be published in December, will be packaged with a CD of Louisiana music.

“The close relationships he has cultivated with writers and musicians - and their respect for him - will ensure that he delivers a fun and memorable Southern Music issue for our readers to enjoy,” Warwick Sabin, publisher of The Oxford American, said in a news release.

Each year, The Oxford American produces a music issue specializing on a particular state. Previous music issues focused on the musical heritage of Arkansas, Alabama and Mississippi.

The magazine’s issue on Louisiana music will be put together in partnership with the Louisiana Office of Tourism, the news release said.

The Oxford American is housed on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. UCA, a public university, partially funds the magazine.

Marc Smirnoff, who started the award-winning magazine in 1992 in Oxford, Miss., and Carol Ann Fitzgerald, the managing editor, were fired July 15. Sabin is serving as interim editor.
