Nelson suspends severance tax campaign

— The backer of a plan to raise the state’s severance tax on natural gas says he’s suspending his campaign to gather more signatures to get the measure on the November ballot.

Former Republican gubernatorial candidate and ex-natural gas executive Sheffield Nelson said he’ll decide by the end of the month whether to resume efforts.

Election officials said last week that more than two-thirds of the signatures the group submitted to qualify for the ballot were invalidated.

The secretary of state’s office said that since the proposal cleared an initial count of signatures, backers would have until Aug. 20 to gather more signatures to qualify for the ballot.
