LITTLE ROCK Gov. Mike Beebe has named Hendrix College political science professor Jay Barth to the state Board of Education.
Beebe on Thursday announced that Barth has been appointed to replace Ben Mays on the board. Barth’s appointment ends June 30, 2019.
Barth chairs the Department of Politics and International Relation at Hendrix, and has taught at the school since 1994.
Barth ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for a state Senate seat in Little Rock and North Little Rock. He lost to Linda Chesterfield in the 2010 primary for the seat.
Mays is a veterinarian from Clinton who was appointed to the board in 2006. During his time on the board, Mays had pushed for more transparency on school districts’ athletic spending.
