Police recommend alternate route for I-40 travelers

— Officials are warning Fourth of July travelers to avoid traveling west on parts of Interstate 40 — unless they want to sit in a traffic jam.

Construction between the Brinkley and Hazen exits is causing major back-ups for drivers. Arkansas State Police say drivers should plan to use an alternate route or expect delays as they sit in miles of backed-up traffic.

Lt. Jackie Clark tells the Times-Herald (http://is.gd/QEQlBy ) that people driving west toward Little Rock should plan to exit the interstate at Brinkley and travel south to U.S. 70. Clark advises drivers to get back on the interstate at Hazen.

Clark says drivers who stay on I-40 west to Little Rock could be in for a long wait if they don’t take an alternate route.
