Area duo makes supercomputer

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/RYAN MCGEENEY --01-17-2012-- Jimmy Smith, left, a computer information systems instructor with the Northwest Technical Institute, and student Chris Smith (no relation), right, have created a supercomputer network that helps researchers at the University of California-Berkley process data related to cancer and HIV research.

An auto mechanic turned technical-school instructor and truck driver turned student are using a homemade supercomputer to join nearly a half-million others using their computers’ down time to help find cures for diseases like HIV, cancer, Alzheimer’s and malaria.
