Chris Christie, New Jersey’s Republican governor, vetoed legislation passed Thursday to allow same-sex marriage in the state and called again for a constitutional amendment to be decided on by the voters, a solution opposed by Democrats who say the right to marry is a civilrights issue that shouldn’t be left to popular vote.
