County’s Elderly, Disabled To Receive Unexpected Tax Refund

About 500 elderly or disabled Washington County residents will receive tax refunds in March because they were overtaxed as property owners, Assessor Jeff Williams said Thursday.

What Is Amendment 79?
Amendment 79 of the state Constitution says an appraisal of a piece of property for tax purposes cannot go up more than 10 percent per year. This limit does not apply to improvements on the property such as new construction. Appraisals on a taxpayer’s “homestead,” or primary residence, cannot go up more than 5 percent a year. Finally, the appraised value of homes are frozen when the owner turns 65 years of age, or becomes disabled.
