Recognize Gay Relationship

I am thankful for The Northwest Arkansas Times. I appreciate its arrival on my doorstep each morning, and am blessed to have a voice and space in this newspaper through the Faith Matters column. This newspaper has given a voice to a wide variety of religious traditions. It is a sign of respect for all people and the faith that they hold dear.

This story is only available from our archives.

Opinion, Pages 5 on 02/11/2012

Everyone knows this newspaper is managed by radical right-wingers, loath to print anything that might offend the thumpers.

Not long ago, they went out on a right-limb and published an elaborate obituary for a miscarried fetus.

The open-minded reader is right to ask whether something like that might not be partially balanced by a discrete recognition of this couple's commitment.

You would think that any news showing that homosexuals are something more than promiscuous slut-devils would be a welcome relief to conservatives, who are so obsessed with the sex that other people are having.

(No, you wouldn't.)

The times they are a'changing, and this paper is being left behind. One of the reasons is stated above.

If the right wing conservatives and the left wing liberals could ever find any middle ground, then maybe our country could be great again. Instead everyone just seems to point fingers in each others faces and tell them how wrong they are for believing in Freedom. A wise old man once challenged me that if your not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. So, all you haters out there turn those fingers right around you are part of the problem. The first place freedom should happen is in our news. It tells the world that we are indeed free in America. Instead we are censored (China). Oh, and the wise old man ( Sam Walton) is rolling over in his grave right now at the path his children has taken his company. Much more than the salary I was paid is the wisdom that Mr. Walton handed down to the me.

BARB: "If the right wing conservatives and the left wing liberals could ever find any middle ground, then maybe our country could be great again.">>

It seems to me that some issues aren't open to this "middle ground."

If you think women are fully human beings, then you believe they should have the right to vote, divorce, own land and have all of the other rights we grant to those with full rights as citizens.

If you believe various minorities, regardless of ethnicity or color, are fully human beings, then they should be able to ride on the front of the bus, drink from any and all public water fountains and engage in "interracial marriage" with whomever they wish.

Likewise, if you believe people with different sexual orientation are fully human and not some lesser fraction of a human being, then it follows that they should be accorded the full and equal human rights we intrinsically allow to every other adult citizen.

The first two categories above were hard won in spite of the conservatives of the day being dragged kicking and screaming all the way. This last category, winning full freedom and fairness for those with a different sexual orientation, is about played out but we still have a few conservative stragglers that haven't quite woken up to the fact that they've already lost yet another battle in their effort to keep yet another minority down.

Here is a picture the Teabaggers from a mere 60 years ago:

Everyone fighting to withhold full equal rights from the GLBT community today, will, in a few short years look just as silly and bigoted as the bunch in the above picture. To many of us who know better, they already do.

There wasn't an argument against interracial marriage that was any less dumb than the arguments conservatives are peddling against gay marriage today.

"Gay rights = Communism!"

Barbara, as fayfreethinker stated above, this is not an issue that has any middle ground. In fact, many conservatives are trying tread in some halfway point by suggesting that "civil unions" and the like are good enough for the GLTB community. The fact is, in a country supposedly based on freedom and equal rights, there is zero ground under the feet of any who argue to keep one group from having the same rights and freedoms as another. It is simply bigoted and Un-American, which will not serve to make this country great again at all.

>>A wise old man once challenged me that if your not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. <<
I recall it was Eldridge Cleaver who first introduced that thought into the American dialogue in a speech in 1968. He also wrote a book entitled "Soul on Ice."
Cleaver was Black Panther. In the 1980s he converted into a conservative Republican.

Sorry to blow your "hate monger" riff and "middle ground" bit.

"If your not part of the solution, your part of the problem, but the perpetual human predicament is the answer soon poses it's own problems" Sydney J Harris.-------Cdawg lets give credit where credit is due. Looks like your black panther might have borrowed it too.

Citizen to newspaper: please just print the d*** engagement announcement. In case you have not noticed, there are *real* issues that you need to be paying attention to. And you are supported by *the entire community*, not just one political wing or camp. PRINT THE NEWS. That's your job.

Thank you.
