Report: Lincoln Officer Shoots Teen After Chase
Posted: February 7, 2012 at 2:06 p.m.
A Lincoln police officer is on paid administrative leave after he reportedly shot an armed teenager in the leg Monday night.
According to a press release issued by the Lincoln Police Department, Officer Chris Williams responded to a suspicious vehicle call around 11:10 p.m.
The vehicle reportedly fled from Williams, nearly striking his patrol car. Williams temporarily lost sight of the vehicle, but relocated it in the area a short time later, the press release said. Williams reportedly tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped off.
Williams followed the vehicle until the driver lost control on Rheas Community Road, just North of Lincoln Lake, and crashed into a fence and gate. The driver, identified by police as a teenage boy, exited the vehicle and Williams exited his patrol car, the release said.
The teen ran east as Williams chased him, ordering him several times to “get on the ground,” according to the news release.
Williams said the boy turned and he saw a knife in his hand. Williams fired one shot from his handgun, striking the teen in the leg, the news release stated.
The boy fled into a wooded area, and was later arrested by officers from the Lincoln Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. He was transported by ambulance to the Washington Regional Medical Center and treated for his wound, the release said.
The teen was arrested in connection with felony fleeing and aggravated assault. Williams was placed on paid administrative leave while the Washington County Sheriff’s Office investigates.
