Head of Mideast investment bank banned from travel abroad

Posted: February 5, 2012 at 2:49 p.m.

— An airport official said the CEO of Mideast investment bank EFG Hermes has been stopped at Cairo international airport by authorities who banned him from traveling abroad.

The airport official said that Yasser el-Mallawany was set to fly to the United Arab Emirates on Sunday, but authorities barred him from leaving Egypt upon orders from the country’s attorney general.

A Justice Ministry official said that el-Mallawany and Gamal Omar, a close friend of ousted President Hosni Mubarak’s son, Gamal, are being investigated for allegedly paying thugs to attack revolutionary youth after a soccer match in the Egyptian city of Port Said. In a riot there last week, 74 people were killed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.
