Benton County Sheriff Boosts Drug Investigations, Annual Report Shows

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office is increasing its drug investigations, stepping up efforts to locate missing children and looking at ways to control medical costs.

Benton County History
• Benton County, founded Sept. 30, 1836, was formed from Washington County.
• The town of Bentonville was created and set as the county seat in 1837.
• The first county courthouse was built that same year.
• The first murder trial was conducted in May 1841, and Edward Welch was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to seven years in the Benton County jail.
• In November 1841, Harrison Oliver was tried for retailing liquors and fined $1.
• In May 1871, a $33,000 contract was awarded to build a Benton County courthouse and jail.
