President pushes veterans job plan at $5 billion price

Police, fire hires to earn grants’ edge; conservation openings in the mix, too

President Barack Obama greets firefighters after a speech Friday in Arlington, Va., that outlined his plan to help veterans find work in police and fire departments and in conservation programs.

To cut the unemployment rate among veterans, President Barack Obama is calling for a new conservation program that would put veterans to work rebuilding trails, roads and levees on public lands.
